Most simply put, it is sitting and relaxing. Many people find that their lives are so full of the demands of work, family, friends and organised leisure pursuits that they have no time to simply relax and be at peace. Most of us are so caught up in planning and working for the future that we take little pleasure from the here and now. In the bustle to “get on”, we miss out on the simple pleasures of life: the changing seasons, birds singing or children discovering the beauty of life. Beauty and joy, however, can be experienced in the most industrial of landscapes or the most difficult living situations. Meditation is a good way of taking time out and allowing yourself to tune into and appreciate the moment, whether you happen to be walking along the beach, sitting by a stream, or just sitting quietly by yourself. Meditation can help you to reach your inner responses to the world around you.
How to Meditate?
It is really very simple, all you need to do is to relax, sit comfortably and breathe deeply, clear your mind of thoughts and really relax through your body. When you begin to meditate, there are three things that you can focus on to make the process easier and more fluid. These will help you to “close off” the outside world and concentrate on the vastness of the inner world.
1. Stillness- Being able to sit relaxed and completely still is very important: it will enable you to drift into the state of awareness where your inner world can be reached and enjoyed.
2. Silence- Try to meditate in a quiet place and learn to create inner silence. This will encourage your mind to see images and hear sounds coming from your inner self.
3. Sensitivity- When you begin any meditation technique, it is important to listen, watch and perceive whatever images, symbols, sounds and other sensations that appear in your mind.
You can use colour to help in your meditation. This can be done by using crystals of the colour you want or bt simply bringing the colour into your thoughts.
Colours are associated with various qualities, so choose a colour to suit your current needs.
RED: vitality, energy, strength and will power.
ORANGE: happiness and laughter
YELLOW: intellect and objectivity
GREEN: cleansing and harmony
TURQUOISE: strengthens the immune system, counteracts disease
BLUE: peace and relaxation, restful sleep
VIOLET: beauty, dignity, self-respect
MAGENTA: release of obsessional thoughts and memories
Meditation can help to bring the body and mind into a state of harmony, so that relationships with people are more fruitful, work flows more efficiently and problems are more easily solved. It is a way in which to balance an active life with calming periods of inner reflection.
